Question: Patient came in for routine prenatal care visit. She knows she wants a tubal ligation at time of delivery. The physician discussed the procedure with her and also got the consent signed at this visit. Can we bill separately for this or is it part of the “prenatal visit?”

Answer: No. Informed consent is part of every surgical code’s pre-work and you will get paid for the tubal separately. Also, discussion with the patient of contraceptive options after birth is part of the expected antepartum counseling, per the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) perinatal guidelines.
