Reader Question:

Still Report Supply If Injection Stopped

Question: A patient came in for an injection. The nurse drew the medication and was preparing to stick the patient, but the patient decided she didn't want it. Can we bill for this or just have the patient pay?

Answer: You cannot bill the insurance company for the injection procedure because the nurse never performed it. But you can report the medication that was wasted when the nurse drew it into the syringe. If the carrier denies the claim, then you can bill the patient for the medication.
