Question: My ob-gyn provided a consultation in the hospital and then performed a dilation and curettage hysteroscopy the following day for the same patient. Can I bill the consultation and the surgery? Answer: Yes, as long as the surgeon correctly documented the consultation -- that is, recorded the request, his opinion and the report back to the requesting physician. The woman becomes the ob-gyn's patient on the day of the hysteroscopy.

Some payers may require that you add modifier -57 (Decision for surgery) to the consultation code (99251-99255) to keep that service out of the surgical global period if the ob-gyn made the decision to perform the surgery during that visit.
