Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Pre-eclampsia

Question: We had a mild pre-eclampsic woman admitted for observation in the hospital three days prior to the decision for delivery. Can I code for this care outside of the global fee?

Wisconsin Subscriber

Answer: Absolutely. Any admission to observation status or inpatient care for a complication of pregnancy may be billed separately at the time of the service. The only caveat is that such care is only billable up to 24 hours prior to delivery. After that point, the care becomes part of the global service.
