Question: We are wanting to start spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) screening our patients using 81401 (Molecular pathology procedure, Level 2 ...). What ICD-10 screening code should we should use? Massachusetts Subscriber Answer: Those who have a family member with SMA or a family member known to be a carrier are at increased risk to be a carrier themselves. ICD-10 guidelines indicate that a genetic carrier does not have the disease and is not at risk of developing the disease. Therefore, the most appropriate code to report for this screening would be Z31.430 (Encounter of female for testing for genetic disease carrier status for procreative management).
