Reader Question:

Include Inductions in the Global Package

Question: Is a two-day induction included in the global package for a normal spontaneous vaginal delivery (NSVD) or can we charge separately for that?
Montana Subscriber Answer: The global package includes the induction of labor either by IV medication or artificial rupture of membranes no matter how long it lasts.
Your physician would have to show significant additional work to qualify for modifier 22 (Increased procedural services) on the global or delivery service, which includes all labor management.
You can report a cervical dilator (59200, Insertion of cervical dilator [e.g., laminaria, prostaglandin] [separate procedure]) outside the global service only if your ob-gyn performed this service the day before the delivery.
