Reader Question:

Implement This Implanon Advice

Question: What code should I bill for Organon's Implanon product? Should I use 11981? Kansas Subscriber Answer: No, you should not report 11981 (Insertion, non-biodegradable drug delivery implant). Code 11981 represents a drug system other than contraceptive. The AMA made this clear in CPT Changes 2002: An Insider's View when the association added this code. Implanon (S0180, Etonogestral [contraceptive] implant system, including implants and supplies) is a single-rod implantable contraceptive that is effective up to three years. For the insertion, you should report 11975 (Insertion, implantable contraceptive capsules). Be sure to include V25.5 (Insertion of implantable subdermal contraceptive) for your diagnosis. Note: Implanon's manufacturer may recommend that you use 11981, but this code does not aptly describe the procedure because the ob-gyn is placing the contraceptive under the skin.
