Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Hint: You Won't Find a Vaginal Dilator HCPCS Code

Question: Our ob-gyn saw a patient complaining of pain during sexual intercourse, and he wants to prescribe a vaginal dilator. However, I cannot find a HCPCS code for it. What code should I use? Would this be covered by BCBS?North Carolina SubscriberAnswer: You won't find any HCPCS codes for vaginal dilators. If the ob-gyn is prescribing them, you simply tell the pharmacy or supplier what you want; you do not use a code. Most insurance carriers do not cover vaginal dilators, as patients use them at home. Therefore, this is not a physician service.
