Question: A physician performed a rectus fascia pubovaginal sling for incontinence and also placed a suprapubic catheter during the same operative session. When I asked the physician why the catheter was placed, she said it was due to the slow return of voiding function following a rectus fascia sling. Is this a routine occurrence similar to when physicians perform a cystoscopy following a hysterectomy to make sure there are no injuries and should not be billed?

Answer: Usually, you should consider the insertion of catheters as included in surgical procedures, but some payers might reimburse 51102 (Aspiration of bladder; with insertion of suprapubic catheter) if the documentation supports use for a particular patient rather than being routinely used after a sling procedure.
