Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Ectopic Pregnancy

Question: We have treated a patient with a confirmed ectopic pregnancy with IM (intramuscular) Methotrexate. The ectopic did resolve. Is there any specific CPT code for the medical treatment of an ectopic pregnancy?

Joseph C. Ptasinski, MD, SC
Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Answer: There is no procedure code for the non-surgical treatment of an ectopic pregnancy. You can bill an injection fee 90782 (therapeutic, prophylactic or diagnostic injection [specify material injected]; subcutaneous or intramuscular) and the Methotrexate supply, J9260 (Methotrexate sodium, 50 mg). If you performed an office visit, that may be billed also.
