Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Don't Include Newborn Exam With Global Fee

Question: Can I report 99435 separately from the global fee? Under what circumstances can I use this code? Missouri Subscriber

Answer: A pediatrician would normally report 99435 (History and examination of the normal newborn infant, including the preparation of medical records [this code should only be used for newborns assessed and discharged from the hospital or birthing room on the same date]).

An examination of the newborn is not part of the global codes for delivery (59400-59622). To report 99435, your ob-gyn would have to perform this pediatric service and document it in the baby's chart.
