Reader Question:

Diagnosis for New Sling

Question: Which diagnosis code should I use for erosion of vaginal sling or excoriation of previous fascial sling? The doctor removed the old sling, replaced it with a new sling and performed a cystoscopy.

Answer: Use the diagnosis code that indicates the reason for a new sling, which is the same as for the old one. For example, the reason for the sling procedure may be stress urinary incontinence, 625.6. Also consider complication code 996.76 (other complications of internal [biological] [synthetic] prosthetic device, implant, and graft; due to genitourinary device, implant, and graft) as a secondary diagnosis if the erosion of the old sling was the cause for the new one.
