Reader Question:

Correct Your Implanon/Nexplanon Codes on Your Encounter Form

Reviewed on April 21, 2015

Question: I'm updating my encounter forms for 2012. Now that CPT 11975 and CPT 11977 are no longer valid, are these codes correct?

Implanon insertion: 11981

Implanon removal: 11976

Implanon removal and insertions: 11976 and 11981

Colorado Subscriber

Answer: Not quite. Code 11976 was left in CPT to report the removal of the capsules for the Norplant system. Here are the correct codes:

Implanon insertion: 11981 (Insertion, non-biodegradable drug delivery implant)

Implanon removal:11982 (Removal, non-biodegradable drug delivery implant)

Implanon removal and Implanon reinsertion: 11983 (Removal with reinsertion, non-biodegradable drug delivery implant)

Norplant removal and Implanon insertion: 11976 (Removal, implantable contraceptive capsules) and 11981.

Note: Implanon now has a cousin called Nexplanon. According to Merck (the drug company that produces both contraceptives), Nexplanon will eventually replace Implanon. The difference between these two systems is that Nexplanon comes in a pre-filled applicator for easier insertion. Despite this, you will bill this newer contraceptive capsule as you bill Implanon using the non-biodegradable drug delivery implant codes.
