Bill for IUD Removal
Question: My ob-gyn inserted an intrauterine device (IUD) more than a year ago and charged for the procedure and supply. Can he now charge to remove it if complications such as abnormal bleeding arise? The insurance company is stating that the removal is integral to the major procedure of insertion and we should not bill the patient. Ohio Subscriber Answer: First, 58300* (Insertion of intrauterine device [IUD]) is not a major procedure. And no procedure code has a global period longer than 90 days in any case. In fact, 58300 is a CPT "starred procedure" that includes no set pre- or postoperative care. And Medicare has also not set a global period for this code because it does not cover the procedure.
You can bill for the IUD's removal with 58301 (Removal of intrauterine device [IUD]), and you should appeal this denial.
