Reader Question:

Avoid V22.x for PUPP

Question: Which ICD-9 code should I use for the pruritic urticarial papules and plaques (PUPP) rash of pregnancy?

Washington Subscriber Answer: Although you might be tempted to use V22.2 (Pregnant state, incidental) and then the rash code (782.1, Rash and other nonspecific skin eruption), don't be. This condition only appears during pregnancy and seems to be passed down from the father's side of the family.

Instead, you should submit 648.93 (Other current conditions classifiable elsewhere, antepartum condition or complication). Then you should add the code for the symptom, such as itching (698.9, Unspecified pruritic disorder).
