ICD-10:
Prepare to Shift 617 Codes to N80 Codes in 2013
Published on Mon Sep 05, 2011
You have reason to rejoice -- here's why.
Endometriosis is a benign condition in which tissue that looks like endometrial tissue grows in abnormal places in the abdomen. Here's how you report these conditions now:
- 617.0, Endometriosis of the uterus
- 617.1, Endometriosis of the ovary
- 617.2, Endometriosis of the fallopian tube
- 617.3, Endometriosis of pelvic peritoneum
- 617.4, Endometriosis of rectovaginal septum and vagina
- 617.5, Endometriosis of intestine
- 617.8, Endometriosis of other specified sites
- 617.9, Endometriosis site unspecified
Keep in mind:
When you use 617.8, you're specifying the endometriosis of the bladder, umbilicus, or vulva.
In 2013, you will find a direct one-to-one correlation between each of these codes. The new code series are:
- N80.0, Endometriosis of uterus
- N80.1, Endometriosis of ovary
- N80.2, Endometriosis of fallopian tube
- N80.3, Endometriosis of pelvic peritoneum
- N80.4, Endometriosis of rectovaginal septum and vagina
- N80.5, Endometriosis of intestine
- N80.8, Other endometriosis
- N80.9, Endometriosis, unspecified
The provider should document where the endometriosis occurs. If the provider documents "Adenomyosis," then you should report N80.0.
Coding Tips:
When you look at the N80 series in your manual, you'll see this category is the first listing under "Noninflammatory disorders of female genital tract (N80-N98)."
Underneath N80.0, you'll see an Excludes1 note that says you cannot report N80.0 and stromal endometriosis (D39.0) together on the same claim.
