Remember to include additional code for drug patient is taking.
The ICD-10-CM code set update for fiscal year (FY) 2025 was posted July 3 to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website. The update, effective October 1, includes 252 new codes, 36 code deletions, and 13 code revisions. For ob-gyn practices, the biggest change focuses on the coding notes underneath gestational diabetes codes.
Look at Which Specific Codes Are Affected
Specifically, you will see a “use additional” note, if applicable, for the diagnosis codes. The notation says: “Use Additional injectable non-insulin antidiabetic drugs (Z79.85).”
This notation applies to the following codes in the O24- (Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium) category:

Underneath O24.9- (Unspecified diabetes mellitus in pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium), you will see a note revision.
As of October 1, you will revise the note specifying “code for long-term (current) use of insulin (Z79.4)” to say “code (for):
What this means: “This addition refers to patients who would be taking drugs like Victoza, Trulicity, or Ozempic,” says Melanie Witt, RN, MA, an independent coding consultant in Guadalupita, New Mexico. “It just adds more information about the drug the patient is using to control her diabetes. You of course would only report this Z code is she were taking one of these drugs.”
