Build Your Own Audit Tool

Building a custom audit tool for your agency can help you gather the most pertinent information about your OASIS accuracy. Keep in mind these tips for developing an audit tool from Pat Jump, MA, BSN, RN, COS-C, with Rice Lake, Wis.-based Acorn's End Training & Consulting.
- Collect only objective data.
- Clearly define your data elements.
- Document detailed instructions for drilling down to each data element.
- Limit each data element to only one unit of information. Don't lump multiple questions into one data element.
- Make sure the time period is clearly stated, especially if you are looking for something during a specific time period.
- Provide training for all auditors.
- Pilot test the data collection tool. If your auditors are confused as to how to interpret and answer questions, provide more clarity.
