Question: How do we report right parieto-occipital craniotomy for resection of mass and mesh repair in a patient who has a skull tumor?

Answer: The code to describe excision of a skull tumor is 61500 (Craniectomy; with excision of tumor or other bone lesion of skull). The removal of the tumor includes the craniotomy/craniectomy as well as closure of the bony defect. If there is a significant defect that requires extensive bony reconstruction, than one may report the 22 (Increased procedural service) modifier for the unusual procedural service or under some circumstances an additional cranioplasty repair code.
