READER QUESTIONS:

Shunt Check Qualifies for 62230

Question: The neurosurgeon plans to check a patient's cerebrospinal fluid shunt  to see if her hydrocephalus is under control before he removes the shunt. Would a revision code be appropriate?

Montana Subscriber

Answer: Yes, you're correct: report a revision if the surgeon doesn't actually remove the shunt during that encounter. File your claim with 62230 (Replacement or revision of cerebrospinal fluid shunt, obstructed valve, or distal catheter in shunt system) and include notes explaining the situation.
