Reader Question:

Target A92.5 for Zika Virus Diagnosis

Question: Is there a new code for the diagnosis of Zika virus disease? Have there been any recent changes in reporting this diagnosis? Our physician provided level-four E/M service to an established patient with a confirmed diagnosis of Zika virus. How can we report these services?

Answer: Effective October 1, 2016, you have a new ICD-10-CM code for Zika virus, i.e. A92.5 (Zika virus disease).

Check date of service: If you are coding for a service dated before Oct. 1, 2016, you will not report A92.5. Before this new code was introduced, coders submitted code A92.8 (Other specified mosquito-borne viral fevers) for Zika virus diagnosis.

E/M service:  Report code 99214 (Office or other outpatient visit for the evaluation and management of an established patient, which requires at least 2 of these 3 key components: a detailed history; a detailed examination; medical decision making of moderate complexity…) for the E/M with A92.5 describing the E/M service.
