Reader Question:

Select 62230 for Shunt Externalization

Question: What is the best code for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt externalization?

Texas Subscriber Answer: The answer depends on whether the surgeon revises or replaces the existing shunt. If the surgeon externalizes an existing CSF shunt only, you should choose 62230 (Replacement or revision of cerebrospinal fluid shunt, obstructed valve, or distal catheter in shunt system). If the surgeon removes an existing shunt and replaces it with a new shunt that remains external, report 62258 (Removal of complete cerebrospinal fluid shunt system; with replacement by similar or other shunt at same operation).
