Reader Question:

Reprogramming a VP Shunt Valve

Question: Is there a CPT code for reprogramming a VP shunt valve?

Answer: CPT 2001 introduced a new code for the reprogramming of a VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt, which drains excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and routes it into the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity to relieve pressure in the brain: 62252 (reprogramming of programmable CSF shunt). If a separate, identifiable evaluation and management (E/M) service is performed at the same time as the reprogramming of the VP shunt valve for example, evaluating the patients symptoms to determine the need for an adjustment you would also code for the appropriate E/M service (99211-99215) with modifier -25 (significant, separately identifiable evaluation and management service by the same physician on the same day of the procedure or other service). Check with your local carriers to see if they are ready for you to use this code before submitting claims.
