Neurosurgery Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Never Report 63267 and 63017 Together

Question: Can we bill together 63267 (Laminectomy for excision or evacuation of intraspinal lesion other than neoplasm, extradural; lumbar) and 63017 (Laminectomy with exploration and/or decompression of spinal cord and/or cauda equina, without facetectomy, foraminotomy or discectomy [eg, spinal stenosis], more than 2 vertebral segments; lumbar) if the surgeon did laminectomies with decompression and removal of epidural lipomatosis at the same level?Florida SubscribeerAnswer: You should not bill 63267 and 63017 together. The laminectomy is the approach component of the excision of the epidural lipomatosis, an extra-dural non-neoplastic process, and is included in 63267.
