Reader Question:

Don't Append Modifier 52 in This Case

Question: I don’t see any guidance on how to report an EEG where all 16 channels were not able to be placed — only 12 channels. I’m not sure if this procedure qualifies as a reduced service because the surgeon still completed the EEG. This particular EEG ran several hours, so I think I should report 95813, but I wanted to confirm that there is no requirement for the number of channels. Can you please help me?

Answer: The particular electroencephalogram (EEG) code you mention is 95813 (Electroencephalogram (EEG) extended monitoring; greater than 1 hour). The CPT® vignette for this service does not include a specification for the number of channels the physician recorded. Therefore, a reduced services modifier like modifier 52 (Reduced services) would not be required for a 12-channel study.
