Reader Question:

Define Localized vs Generalized for Lymphadenopathy

Question: Can you suggest the ICD-10 options for the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy?

Alaska Subscriber

Answer When reporting lymphadenopathy in ICD-10, you will need to ascertain if your physician documented enlarged lymph nodes were localized to one particular region or generalized. Accordingly, you choose from the following diagnosis codes:

  • R59.0, Localized enlarged lymph nodes
  • R59.1, Generalized enlarged lymph nodes

Tip: If your physician does not document either localized or generalized lymphadenopathy, you’ll shift to code R59.9 (Enlarged lymph nodes, unspecified).
