In addition to the scores of new codes you’ll need to learn prior to ICD-10 2023 implementation, there will also be several existing codes that will be converted to parent codes. When a code is converted to a parent, it becomes a base code for other codes in its “family.”

Here is a sampling of the codes that have been converted to parent, as well as some of the new codes that were birthed along with these conversions.

Convert to Parent F01.51 (Vascular dementia with behavioral disturbance)

New codes have been added to detail the following elements in this diagnosis:

Severity: Unspecified, mild, moderate, severe
Presence/absence of other symptoms: agitation, behavioral disturbance, psychotic disturbance, mood disturbance, anxiety
