Neurosurgery Coding Alert

Correction:

Anterior Arthrodesis

The February 2002 Neurosurgery Coding Alert (page 9) incorrectly stated that during anterior arthrodesis (22554), "the surgeon enters through the back of the neck to access the spine ..." Rather, during an anterior interbody approach as described by 22554, the surgeon enters through the side of the neck, for example, by making an incision along the collar line from the middle of the front of the neck toward the side. The surgeon then separates the carotid artery and trachea to reach the underlying cervical vertebrae.
