Coding Correction on Laminectomy, Stabilization Device Article

We would like to provide an update to volume 18, issue 12 of the Neurosurgery Coding Alert. This article, titled "Use Separate Codes for Laminectomy, Stabilization Device" documents the use of stabilization device codes 22867 (Insertion of interlaminar/interspinous process stabilization/distraction device, without fusion, including image guidance when performed, with open decompression, lumbar; single level) and +22868 (... second level [List separately in addition to code for primary procedure]) when performed alongside a laminectomy. However, in the instance of a laminectomy code 63047 (Laminectomy, facetectomy and foraminotomy (unilateral or bilateral with decompression of spinal cord, cauda equina and/or nerve root[s], [eg, spinal or lateral recess stenosis]), single vertebral segment; lumbar), Correct Coding Initiative edits do not allow you to code the stabilization device codes alongside the laminectomy code. In the scenario outlined on this reader question, you will only code 63047 and +63048 (... each additional segment, cervical, thoracic, or lumbar [List separately in addition to code for primary procedure]).
