Threshold for Video EEG Reporting

Question: How long do we actually need to videotape the patient during a 95 hour video EEG? My neurologist thinks the guideline is 12 hours.

Answer: The video EEG code, 95951 (Monitoring for localization of cerebral seizure focus by cable or radio, 16 or more channel telemetry, combined electroencephalographic [EEG] and video recording and interpretation [e.g., for presurgical localization], each 24 hours) is based on each 24 hours of monitoring, with a threshold of more than 12 hours of monitoring needed during a day before you can report the code. If 12 hours of video EEG monitoring or less is performed during a 24 hour period, you would need to append modifier 52 (Reduced service) to the 95951 code. Ninety-five hours of video EEG diagnostic testing would be reported as 95951 with 4 units of service.
