Question: A patient reports complaining of sudden-onset paralysis on the left side of their face and a drooping left eyebrow. The physician decides to perform a left-sided electromyography (EMG) and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain without contrast material. Final diagnosis is Bell’s palsy. How should I report this encounter?

Answer: On the claim, report the following:

  • 70540 (Magnetic resonance (eg, proton) imaging, orbit, face, and/or neck; without contrast material(s)) for the MRI
  • 95867 (Needle electromyography; cranial nerve supplied muscle(s), unilateral for the EMG)
  • G51.0 (Bell’s palsy) appended to 70540 and 95867 to represent the patient’s condition.
