Learn What to Report for Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulator

Question: Our neurologist is about to begin using a hypoglossal nerve stimulator for patients with sleep apnea. How will we code this service?

Mississippi Subscriber

Answer: The hypoglossal nerve is the twelfth cranial nerve and controls movement of the tongue. CPT® 2015 does not include a code that accurately reports this service, which means you should submit 64999 (Unlisted procedure, nervous system). Remember you can only report an “unlisted” procedure code once per session.

Note: The existing code 64568 (Incision for implantation of cranial nerve [e.g., vagus nerve] neurostimulator electrode array and pulse generator) does not apply in this situation because it does not describe the placement of chest wall sensors.
