Question: I’m confused about how to bill J codes for pain management pumps. Here’s an example from one of our physicians: “Provider notes indicate 2000 mcg/mL of Baclofen in a 40mL pump.” Would I simply multiply 0.20 x 40 and divide 8.00/10 Mg to reach 2 units?

Answer: First, ensure that you’re reporting the correct medication code, which would be J0475 (Injection, Baclofen, 10 mg).
Your provider documented the amount in micrograms (mcg). Remember that 1 mg equals 1000 mcg. That means the provider is using 2 mg/mL of Baclofen in a 40 mL pump. He is administering a total of 80 mg (2 x 40). You’ll report 8 units of J0475 since each unit represents 10 mg of Baclofen.
