Use This Generic Code for All Periodic Paralysis Diagnoses

Question: When a patient suffers from familial periodic paralysis, what is the correct ICD-10 code for the condition?

Oklahoma Subscriber

Answer: This is no different than plain old periodic paralysis; there is no distinction for it being familial. On the claim, report G72.3 (Periodic paralysis) for the condition.

There are also several other alternate terms for periodic paralysis that you’ll report with G72.3. Per ICD-10, those terms are:

  • Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis
  • Hypokalemic periodic paralysis
  • Myotonic periodic paralysis
  • Normokalemic periodic paralysis
  • Potassium sensitive periodic paralysis.
