Single Code Covers Test and Follow-up Visit

Question: Our neurologist routinely orders tests for a patient (such as a memory scales test) and then schedules a later appointment to review results. He typically tracks all the hours for testing and interpretation, then bills for all the services on the return visit. How should I report the services -- and what date of service should I use?

Answer: Report the services for your physician and the technologist who conducted the test on separate dates, based on when they performed the services. Submit 96119 (Neuropsychological testing [e.g., halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery, Wechsler Memory Scales and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test], with qualified healthcare professional interpretation and report, administered by technician, per hour of technician time, face-to-face) for the test itself.

Although you might be tempted to report your physician's work as separate services (testing/interpretation and following up with the patient), one code covers both aspects. Submit your physician's services with 96118 (Neuropsychological testing [e.g., Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery, Wechsler Memory Scales and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test], per hour of the psychologist's or physician's time, both face-to-face time with the patient and time interpreting test results and preparing the report).

Carrier hint: Some carriers will pay for 96118 and 96119 on the same date, but others will not. Educate yourself -- and your providers -- on your local guidelines to know what to expect.
