Be Careful When Reporting Second Opinions

Question: If one of our neurologists offers a second opinion, how should I report the service now that CPT has deleted the confirmatory consult codes? Minnesota Subscriber Answer: If a patient comes to your practice and requests a second opinion, you should report the appropriate E/M code. You would use "office or other outpatient visit" codes 99201-99205 for new patients and 99212-99215 for established patients. Remember: Because the patient generated this second-opinion request, you should treat this office visit as you would any other E/M visit.
