Reader Question:

Watch for Details Like 'Radiculopathy' When Choosing Codes

Question: I have dictation that states the patient has cervical spondylosis without myelopathy, but with radiculopathy. I found ICD-10 codes for “other spondylosis” that list each region, but am not sure what to report.

Answer: ICD-10 includes many more combination diagnosis options for these types of conditions than ICD-9 did. You can code this scenario with M47.22 (Other spondylosis with radiculopathy, cervical region).  Be aware that ICD-10 also separates the cervical region into three separate codes for additional specificity: M47.21 (Other spondylosis with radiculopathy, occipito-atlanto-axial region) and M47.23 (Other spondylosis with radiculopathy, cervicothoracic region).
