Neurology & Pain Management Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Upper and Lower 95903, 95904 Allowed on Same Day

Question: Can we bill 95903 and 95904 for upper and lower extremity tests on the same day? Minnesota Subscriber Answer: Yes, your provider can perform upper and lower nerve conduction studies (NCS) on the same day, and you can bill them as such. Submit codes 95903 (Nerve conduction, amplitude and latency/velocity study, each nerve; motor, with F-wave study) and 95904 (... sensory) as appropriate, based on your provider's documentation. Caution: Although multiple tests are allowed on the same day, some insurance companies (including Medicare) often have limitations for the maximum number of NCS they will pay for. Check whether the payer requires the physician to conduct nerve conduction studies and EMGs together before reimbursing the claim. Insurers such as Aetna, United Healthcare and Cigna all follow this guideline.
