Reader Question:

Unused Meds Don't Always Qualify for Modifier JW

Question: Can we bill for pump medications that were ordered and not used due to the patient changing providers? If so, would we append the JW modifier?

Answer: No, you cannot bill for this because you ordered the drug but never used it for the patient.

Modifier JW (Drug amount discarded/not administered to any patient) applies when you have a drug surplus that is discarded by a healthcare professional.
