Reader Question:

Submit 95039 for Laser Touch One Neurostimulator

Question: Our neurologist wants to confirm if we can charge for the Laser Touch One neurostimulator. Are we correct to report this as 64550 (Application of surface [transcutaneous] neurostimulator)?North Carolina SubscriberAnswer: The Laser Touch One device is a cold laser, and as such it would not be appropriate to report use with the CPT® code 64550. Supposedly, it is an over-the-counter device that is a combination of low-level laser and micro-current electrical stimulation. There is a HCPCS code that would potentially be applicable: S8948 (Application of a modality [requiring constant provider attendance] to one or more areas; low-level laser; each 15 minutes). For Medicare, it would likely need to be 97039 (Unlisted modality [specify type and time if constant attendance]). You should submit adequate documentation in support of the nature, extent, and need for the procedure and the time, effort, and equipment necessary to provide the service.
