Reader Question:
Report Only One Unit of Evoked Potentials
Published on Thu Jan 01, 2004
Question: May I report multiple units of 95925-95927 if I test multiple sites?
New York Subscriber Answer: In all cases, you should bill for only a single unit of 95925 (Short-latency somatosensory evoked potential study, stimulation of any/all peripheral nerves or skin sites, recording from the central nervous system; in upper limbs), regardless of the number of nerves or dermatomes (skin sites) the neurologist stimulates in each upper limb (on one or both sides). Moreover, you should use only one unit of 95926 (... in lower limbs) regardless of the number of nerves or dermatomes the neurologist stimulates in each lower limb (on one or both sides).
You must test at least two sites (one on each side of the body) to report 95925, 95926 or 95927 (... in the trunk or head). Because CPT specifically defines these codes as bilateral, you must append modifier -52 (Reduced services) for a unilateral study.
Note: Do not use 95925 or 95926 to report monofilament nerve testing to evaluate peripheral neuropathy. Rather, include this service as part of any E/M service provided.
