Reader Question:

Only Report 95834 One Time

Question: What’s the maximum number of units we can bill for 95834?

Minnesota Subscriber

Answer: You should report only one unit of 95834 (Muscle testing, manual [separate procedure] with report; total evaluation of body, including hands) for a single encounter.

The code represents manual muscle testing of any part of the patient’s body, including the hands. During the procedure, the provider tests the patient’s muscle strength by asking the patient to contract a specific muscle, including muscles in the arms, legs, or hands. Providers may also perform testing in different body positions, such as on the side. The provider assigns grades to the results of the testing, depending on the patient’s ability to move specific muscles.
