Neurology & Pain Management Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Look For Sleep Time in Home Sleep Study Recording

Question: How do you report when the neurologist documents the home sleep studies along with recording of sleep time?Florida SubscriberAnswer: You report 95800 (Sleep study, unattended, simultaneous recording; heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory analysis [e.g., by airflow or peripheral arterial tone], and sleep time) when your neurologist documents that the patient performed the recording of time of sleep along with sleep study recording at home. The descriptor in code 95800 is explanatory for the same. Note: You report 95801 (Sleep study, unattended, simultaneous recording; minimum of heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory analysis [e.g., by airflow or peripheral arterial tone]) when your neurologist documents recording of minimum heart rate in the sleep study monitoring. You may confirm the data in the printout from the recording device.
