Question:
My neurologist wants to participate in PQRI. What do we need to do in order to start this process? Connecticut Subscriber
Answer:
There are a number of steps for participating in the patient quality research initiative (PQRI). First, create a list of three or more measures that the practice will focus on for PQRI.
These criteria might include a definition of the reporting period and which personnel will be involved. Once the team is selected, it's important to drive home the point that clear documentation will be crucial to theplan's success.
Here's why:
In order to qualify for the PRQI bonus, you have to report on at least three of 179 PQRI measures in 80 percent of the eligible cases. Some 2010 measure topics that might be applicable to your neurology practice include: stroke and stroke rehabilitation, major depressive disorder, preventive care and screening, medication list and reconciliation, functional communication, diabetes and foot exam, fall prevention, and advance care plan. You can view the entire 2010 PQRI measure list at
www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI/Downloads/2010_PQRI_MeasuresList_111309.pdf After that, simply begin looking for encounters that might fit your measures list. There is no sign-up process for PQRI. Just start reporting the proper numerators and denominators for PQRI patients who fall into one of your selected measures, and the feds will register it.
Tip:
Put an audit team in place to provide error identification feedback to everyone who is involved in the PQRI process and who can validate your performance.
