Question: We are doing nerve conduction studies in our office. The neurologist supervises the testing and signs the encounter. We bill it under his name and NPI for both the technical and professional components. A technician who is an employee of the clinic actually administers the NCS. Whose signature should be on the report? Only the physician since the technician isn’t billing under her NPI for the technical portion? Or do we need both signatures since they’re each handling part of the service?

Answer: Since the physician supervises the testing and you’re billing it under his name and NPI for both the technical and professional components, you do not need the technician’s signature. However, some payers have individual guidelines and may ask for both signatures. Check with the payer in question to understand their rules.
