Neurology Coding:

Get a Leg up With MEG Coding Smarts

Question: When the neurologist performs a magnetoencephalography (MEG) with recording and analysis, what CPT® code should I report for the study?

RCI Subscriber

Answer: It depends on what the MEG is measuring. Go back and check the encounter notes for more information on the specifics of the MEG. Then, choose one of the following codes, depending on encounter specifics:

  • 95965 (Magnetoencephalography (MEG), recording and analysis; for spontaneous brain magnetic activity (eg, epileptic cerebral cortex localization))
  • 95966 (… for evoked magnetic fields, single modality (eg, sensory, motor, language, or visual cortex localization))

Use this add-on: When reporting 95966, be sure to check for other modalities the neurologist might have employed during the MEG. For each of the additional modalities, you can report +95967 (… for evoked magnetic fields, each additional modality (eg, sensory, motor, language, or visual cortex localization) (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)).
