ICD-10 2023:

Use These Codes now for MD, Intracranial Injuries

Remember, the codes went into effect Oct. 1.

ICD-10 has snuck up sooner than expected, as it seems to every year.

Breakdown: The new code list took effect Oct. 1, 2023, so you should be using the new diagnosis codes on your claims, when appropriate.

And just in time to ring in the new ICD-10 year, we’ve got a few more diagnosis codes that you should know for optimal diagnosis coding. Take a look at the new ICD-10 codes you’re going to want to know now.

This Muscular Dystrophy Type Gets Code Set

The first set of new codes we’ll address will be in the G71.0- (Muscular dystrophy) code family. ICD-10 2023 adds the following:

  • G71.03- (Limb girdle muscular dystrophies)
  • G71.031 (Autosomal dominant limb girdle muscular dystrophy)
  • G71.032 (Autosomal recessive limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to calpain-3 dysfunction)
  • G71.033 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to dysferlin dysfunction)
  • G71.034 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to sarcoglycan dysfunction)
  • G71.0340 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to sarcoglycan dysfunction, unspecified)
  • G71.0341 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to alpha sarcoglycan dysfunction)
  • G71.0342 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to beta sarcoglycan dysfunction)
  • G71.0349 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to other sarcoglycan dysfunction)
  • G71.035 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy due to anoctamin-5 dysfunction)
  • G71.038 (Other limb girdle muscular dystrophy)
  • G71.039 (Limb girdle muscular dystrophy, unspecified)

Condition definition: According to MedlinePlus, limb-girdle muscular dystrophy is “a group of diseases that cause weakness and wasting of the muscles in the arms and legs. The muscles most affected are those closest to the body (proximal muscles), specifically the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, pelvic area, and thighs.”

Impact: Previously, you would have coded limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (MD) with G71.09 (Other specified muscular dystrophies). The addition of specific codes for this condition will make diagnosis coding more accurate and paint a more complete picture of what is ailing the patient.

1 more G code: ICD-10 2023 will also add G90.A (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome [POTS]) to its collection of codes. According to Cleveland Clinic, POTS “is a condition that affects blood flow. POTS causes the development of symptoms — usually lightheadedness, fainting and an uncomfortable, rapid increase in heartbeat — that come on when standing up from a reclining position and relieved by sitting or lying back down.” The G90.A code will be added to the G90.- (Disorders of autonomic nervous system) code set.

Check Out These New Neuro Disorder, Intracranial Injury Codes

In addition to the limb-girdle MD code sets, you’ll have another pair of new code sets: one in F06.- (Other mental disorders due to known physiological condition) and another in S06 (Intracranial injury).

From now on, you should use these new ICD-10 codes, when appropriate:

  • F06.7 (Mild neurocognitive disorder due to known physiological condition)
  • F06.70 (Mild neurocognitive disorder due to known physiological condition without behavioral disturbance)
  • F06.71 (Mild neurocognitive disorder due to known physiological condition with behavioral disturbance)

Impact: This change specifically adds mild neurocognitive disorder to this code set; previously, you probably would have had to use the less-specific F06.8 (Other specified mental disorders due to known physiological conditions) to represent this condition.

Also, you should use these new ICD-10 codes, when appropriate:

  • S06.89A (Other specified intracranial injury with loss of consciousness status unknown)
  • S06.89AA (Other specified intracranial injury with loss of consciousness status unknown, initial encounter)
  • S06.89AD (Other specified intracranial injury with loss of consciousness status unknown, subsequent encounter)
  • S06.89AS (Other specified intracranial injury with loss of consciousness status unknown, sequela)

Impact: This change means that you now have more specific codes to specify that loss of consciousness status was unknown. This option wasn’t available until ICD-10 2023; previously, you probably would have had to use the less-specific S06.899- (Other specified intracranial injury with loss of consciousness of unspecified duration) to represent this condition.
