CPT^® has released its list of new, revised, and deleted codes for CPT^® 2024, and your practice will need to take note of a few changes coming to the code book.

The basics: The new additions will update several code sets in CPT^®, making it clear what code to choose for these services.

In order to use the new codes correctly, however, you’ll need to get to know them. Read on for more information on the codes you’ll need to start using on January 1, 2024.

Device Insertion Codes Get a Bump

CPT^® 2024 will premiere these new codes:

• 61889 (Insertion of skull-mounted cranial neurostimulator pulse generator or receiver, including craniectomy or craniotomy, when performed, with direct or inductive coupling, with connection to depth and/or cortical strip electrode array(s))
• 61891 (Revision or replacement of skull-mounted cranial neurostimulator pulse generator or receiver with connection to depth and/or cortical strip electrode array(s))
• 61892 (Removal of skull-mounted cranial neurostimulator pulse generator or receiver with cranioplasty, when performed)
• 64596 (Insertion or replacement of percutaneous electrode array, peripheral nerve, with integrated neurostimulator, including imaging guidance, when performed; initial electrode array)
• 64597 (Insertion or replacement of percutaneous electrode array, peripheral nerve, with integrated neurostimulator, including imaging guidance, when performed; each additional electrode array (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure))
• 64598 (Revision or removal of neurostimulator electrode array, peripheral nerve, with integrated neurostimulator)

Analysis: The addition of 61889 through 61892 will make the intracranial neurostimulator set — codes 61850 (Twist drill or burr hole(s) for implantation of neurostimulator electrodes, cortical) through 61888 (Revision or removal of cranial neurostimulator pulse generator or receiver) — more robust.
