Will disease management find a happy home in Medicare? Yet another demonstration project from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services aims to find out.

In a Feb. 28 Federal Register notice, CMS invited organizations that supply DM services to submit proposals for new programs to manage the health care of beneficiaries with certain chronic conditions. Participating organizations will receive capitated payments for all Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services provided under tailored programs designed to coordinate care for conditions such as stroke, congestive heart disease and diabetes.

In other Federal Register notices issued as part of CMS’ typical last-Friday-of-the-month flurry of regulations, the agency:

  • describes updated criteria and standards it will use to evaluate the performance of fiscal intermediaries, carriers and durable medical equipment regional carriers;
  • invites comments on the appropriateness of payment amounts for new technology intraocular lenses furnished by ambulatory surgical centers;
  • announces a $35 million fund for grants to support competitive employment of people with disabilities, available to state agencies; and
  • requests nominations for the advisory panel on ambulatory payment classification groups.
