In an effort to appease calls from the healthcare community to lessen the restraints of HIPAA, HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued a Request for Information (RFI) on ideas to modify the Privacy Rule. “This RFI is another crucial step in our Regulatory Sprint to Coordinated Care, which is taking a close look at how regulations like HIPAA can be fine-tuned to incentivize care coordination and improve patient care, while ensuring that we fulfill HIPAA’s promise to protect privacy and security,” said Eric Hargan, HHS Deputy Secretary. The agency is also asking for the public’s thoughts on the opioid crisis and HIPAA, parental input in care situations, and information sharing to better improve treatment, the OCR release suggested. Comments will be accepted until Feb. 11, 2019.
